How To Install Wall Murals

how to install wall murals

How you install a wall mural depends on whether the wall mural is classified as peel-and-stick, or if it is a wall mural that requires adhesive to be applied for application.

Peel-and-stick wall murals are generally easier to install than adhesive-requiring wall murals are. But, luckily for you, both are super easy to install, and we’ll be taking you through the installation steps for both of them.

Steps To Install Peel-And-Stick Wall Murals

Installing peel-and-stick wall murals is the easiest and quickest of all the installation processes, which is why all of our custom wall murals are made to be like this.

Prepare the Wall

The first thing that needs to be done before the installation process can commence is preparing the wall for the wall mural.

Many people ask about the best wall murals for bedroom spaces, or wherever they’re looking to install a mural. The truth is, a great mural is only half of the result. If the installation isn’t good – the mural won’t look good either.

To begin the process, examine your wall for any flaws.  Wall murals need a smooth wall so that they can stick properly and not peel off in a few weeks.

If you spot any bumps or rough patches, you need to fix these by sanding down any lumps and filling in cracks. The surface then needs to be cleaned with a warm, damp cloth so there is no dust or residue left on the surface. Now the installation can begin.

Carefully Place Your Mural

Regardless of how many panels you have, you always start with the left-most panel. Peel the backing of the panel down a few inches from the top of the mural.

Align the mural with the top of the wall, and smooth the exposed piece onto the wall. Next, peel a few more inches of the backing down, and smooth it onto the wall again. Repeat this process until the whole mural is firmly on the wall.

Look For Air Bubbles

Use a smoothing tool to get rid of any air bubbles or wrinkles. Start from the middle and make your way out.

Ensure There’s An Overlap Between Panels

Overlap the second panel over the first panel by about two inches to match up the image.

Continue the same steps as above with all of the panels.

Seal Your Mural

A very important step that should form part of your installation process is how to seal a wall mural, as this will increase its life span hugely.

Our peel-and-stick wall murals are also removable and reusable. So if you are moving house, for example, and want to take the wall mural with you, give us a call and find out how to remove wall murals, as well as how to reuse wall murals.

How To Install A Vinyl Wall Mural

A vinyl wall mural refers to the type of material that the wall mural is made out of, and can be either a peel-and-stick, or it can be a paste-required wall mural.

If it is a peel-and-stick, the exact same method as above would be followed for installation. If the mural is paste required, you would prepare the wall as usual, and then use a paste to stick it onto the wall.

We will describe this in detail below, but it is important that you are aware that vinyl murals can be installed in two different ways. This way, you will know to purchase the correct type of wall mural.

Apply Adhesive Paste To Panels

Hanging a wall mural with paste is a bit more complex than a peel-and-stick mural.

First, prepare the wall as explained. Then, you are going to need to apply the adhesive to the panels.

Place the first panel on the floor, front down. Pour the adhesive on the back of the wall mural and spread it out using a paintbrush or roller. Make sure that the adhesive reaches all the corners of the mural too so that there is no peeling.

Let Adhesive Set

Once the mural is fully covered, fold both edges of the mural towards the middle so that they meet in the center, and lightly paste the edges down. Let the mural set for 10 minutes so that the adhesive can be properly absorbed.

Apply Carefully To Wall

Thereafter, apply it to the wall the same way that you would with a peel-and-stick mural – starting from the top, one section at a time. Make use of a squeegee to make sure that the mural is properly stuck to the wall.

Conclusion

As you can see, installing a wall mural isn’t as daunting as it may seem. We recommend making sure you get at least another one or two people to help you with the process because if you do it alone there is a lot of room for error and applying the wall mural on skew.

It is also up to you to decide whether you would like to make use of a peel-and-stick wall mural, or one that requires paste.

The peel-and-stick mural is a lot easier to apply, which is why most people tend to opt for them. Neither one is better than the other.

One last thing that we do recommend when installing wall murals is to get the best wall mural that you possibly can. A good quality wall mural will be much easier to install, and it will also last longer, and look better.
