What are Dibond Signs?

Dibond is one of the most sturdy, lightweight, and weather resistant materials to print to and make signs out of. It is an excellent choice for creating long lasting durable signs for indoor and outdoor use. Dibond can be printed on directly with solvent-free, non-toxic UV resistant inks. By using UV resistant inks your signs will be sunlight and weather resistant and retain their color long term.

Dibond has been the industry’s leading aluminum composite material (ACM) for 15+ years. It is the flattest panel on the market, and Dibond is an excellent alternative to other strong materials such as Plywood, PVC, or Coroplast. It is rustproof, rot proof, waterproof, and chemically resistant.

Size, Shape, and Weight of Dibond Signs

Dibond comes in a variety of thickness from 2mm to 4mm. It is made of two sheets of .012” thick aluminum with a solid polyethylene core sandwiched between the two sheets. Because of its composite structure, Dibond is both thicker and lighter than aluminum at approximately one half the weight of straight aluminum. The available printed sizing for Dibond ranges from as small as 6” wide and 6” wide up to 120” x 120”.

The strength and versatility of Dibond allows it to be cut to just about any shape you desire. Because of this versatility, you can be as creative as you want when designing signs. You can custom cut the sign to the outline of your creative logo, or create three dimension looks by positioning multiple Dibond signs in front of each other for a layered effect.

Additional Options on Dibond Sign Printing

The aluminum sheets come in coil-painted paint, brushed aluminum finishes, or bronzed Dibond finishes. The brushed aluminum finish gives it an ultra premium metal look, perfect for modern design. You’ll get the same aluminum finish looks as aluminum signs, but the material will be thicker and more lightweight. Dibond is popular especially for buyers who want signs printed with more depth and texture to them than a typical aluminum sign. The bronzed finish is another premium looking finish that some buyers may prefer over the standard or brushed aluminum finish.

Additionally, you can print double sided onto Dibond boards instead of just a single side. Many printers will include an additional markup to print on both sides of the board, but you can save money by printing on both sides instead of purchasing two separate signs if you’ll be using them in such a way that they can be flipped around. Examples of this would be a Dibond sign hanging out in front of a shop so passersby can see the shop sign from both sides of the sidewalk.

Aluminum Dibond Prints

All Dibond prints are printed onto aluminum sheeting, since both sides of a Dibond sign are aluminum sheets at .012” thick. Many people opt for Dibond instead of aluminum because it is lighter weight, while thicker at the same time. If you are looking at aluminum printing only, we recommend you look at aluminum Dibond prints as well, depending on the project.

Dibond Photo Printing

The superior surface of Dibond protects your investment in high quality photographs by protecting their color and application to the surface long term. Dibond is an excellent choice for photo printing because the material printed on is weather and element resistant so you can use it anywhere you want to display your high quality photos.

Dibond is resistant to bowing since it is so strong and made of two sheets of aluminum with a solid core in the middle. This will keep your photo mounts strong and durable for long-term use. Dibond photo mounting is also suitable for framing as well, and many galleries opt to use Dibond photo mounts when they exhibit work. This archival quality mounting solution is perfect for large photo mounted pieces and touring exhibitions.

Recommended Applications of Dibond

Dibond is great for indoor and outdoor uses because it is lightweight, rustproof, waterproof, and weatherproof. Dibond can be used for P-O-P displays, outdoor exhibits, tradeshow exhibits, indoor and outdoor signage for your business, outdoor kiosks, exhibition quality photo mounting, archival framing, structural signage, marquee signage, large art pieces, and many other applications. Your creativity is your only limit.

Cutting Dibond

Dibond can be custom cut to any size or shape using a CNC routing machine. Professional printing companies that are printing your Dibond sign are able to cut the Dibond to most custom sizes and shapes. As a consumer or business you won’t be able to cut the Dibond on your own without specialized cutting machinery, so we recommend working with your printer directly to ensure you get the custom Dibond cuts done right the first time.
One strong benefit of Dibond is it’s resistance to warping and curling, making it ideal for outdoor and weather resistant use. It can be cut to any shape without the danger of warping or curling at the edges, so you can use it outside your building, use it on any outdoor sings, or use it as marquee signage.
